About Tammy J. Cover, MS, LPC

I come from a family full of people who didn’t need therapy - according to them. They believed therapy is only for “crazy” people. There were definitely some awkward moments when I decided to become a counselor. If you grew up in a home like mine you probably learned the same rules that I learned. '

Don’t trust. Don’t feel. Don’t talk.

And when you need help, those rules can keep you from getting it.

Everyone needs a safe place to work through life experiences. All the more so when those experiences are traumatic. But if, like me, you grew up thinking that only “crazy” people go to therapy, then you will be looking for anything but a therapist.  I get it. I did the same thing. I read books, I did countless Bible studies. I talked to pastors or older women looking for advice. I even went to a “Biblical” counselor at one point because that seemed more...well...“Biblical”. I’m not knocking any of those things. They were all super helpful in their own way. But they are not therapy and when you are trying to recover from trauma, you need support that these other resources are not able to provide. Ultimately, what brought me to therapy was my son. He needed therapy for trauma he had been through. There was a couple guest speaking at church, a husband and wife. The husband was a counselor and the wife a psychologist and they spoke to exactly what my family was experiencing. I was hooked. I signed my son up with the husband and I signed up with another counselor in his office. The experience not only helped me recover from years of psychological and spiritual abuse, it inspired me to become a counselor. Once I began to heal, I didn’t want to keep this to myself. I wanted everyone to know they can experience peace and freedom, regardless of what their history has been.
